On the Naughty Step: Blistex Relief Cream

Let me start off by saying that this stuff is actually one of my miracle products. It is the only lip product I've had that actually treats chapped lips without just glossing over the problem. (Don't excuse the pun, it was a bloody good one!)

My only problem is with the awful packaging!

Those that own this will know what I mean, but for those that don't:

- It comes in a flexible metal tube, which if accidentally squished in your bag, will erupt without warning when you next open it.

- Due to the free-flowing nature of this product, the nozzle of the tube is constantly all gooey and yuck.

- Another pet peeve is that you have to use your finger to apply it, unlike a chapstick, so you end up with a gooey mitt too... (I'm easily annoyed.)

(Goo)

Blistex have recently extended their range to include these exciting looking glosses, massagers and balms. All in different variations of practical, sturdy, plastic packaging.

So why not their Relief Cream? It is surely one of their best sellers. And I think it would sell more if we were spared the dread of unscrewing the scummy lid to be greeted with a potential explosion of product! Maybe it's all a ploy to make it run out faster so we have to buy more... Hmm!

Please, Blistex. I love you, but hurry up and make like your American counterpart and get rid of this nerve-wracking, messy and wasteful packaging!

What are your thoughts on this?

  1. as I was reading your post I was nodding along. See, the problem with my tube is that as soon as you remove the lid, product just comes gushing out and will not stop until you force the lid back on. IT IS SO ANNOYING! mucky hands=unhappy Hannah!
Wouldn't mind so much but this stuff Is actually amaze! Grrrrr :o(

  2. Oh goodness it reminds me of the 'Bazzuca that Verruca' packaging... Which I definitely wouldn't want anywhere near my lips! :o

  3. YAY i love that this blog feature is back! I've actually never heard of this blistex beaut, and i know it's not the objective but you've totally sold it to me (you genius you!). Although the squish/erupt senario is quite problematic! Always happens with my models own lipglosses and it's so annoying and wasteful! X

  4. i use this product ALL the time - i agree that its the only thing i have come across that actually repairs the lips. i agree that the packaging is nasty and i always find that sometimes its comes out all liquidy and separated yuck! xxx

  5. I've had this same issue for ages too. So now I use the little blue pot instead. It's pretty good at treating the lips but you won't get some icky mess in your bag by having to carry it around with you.

  6. I so agree! I've got a tube of bonjela currently knocking around in the bottom of my bag and i know it's about to give up on me soon!

  7. This is my fav lip product. But I agree, it's not well thought out packaging, and so many times I've been in the middle of time with no tissues to hand and FAR too much lipbalm on my finger!!

  8. I swear by this product, especially in winter! Definitely agree with the packaging issue... I have to clean it now and again because the cream goes all horrible inside the lid :/ x

  9. Blistex works so great on my lips, I completely feel ya on all your points! Once you squeeze it to get the cream out, it keeps on coming which, like you said makes it sticky and such a waste! And because its foil, when I'm almost finished with the tube and I roll it up to get the last bit, the foil tears and then it's an even bigger mess! Really wish the packaging was different! /rant xoxo

  10. I've had this problem so many times. I think I've got a good technique going with it after all this time though!

  11. Oh my good god, YES. What is with it? It squeezes out like a little worm all by itself, which also worried me a little because I don't know if that's sound?

  12. I had the same problem with a tube of Deep Heat which exploded in my bag - that did not smell good! It was really sticky too.

  13. We say the same thing in this household, it really does annoy me when it runs out, it's far too messy but I put up with the product because it works, hopefully they will make the american version of it! :D

  14. I have severely dry lips all year and tried every lipbalm under the sun. Love the blistex cream especially if they have cracked open but as you said total nightmare packaging. I found this one in boots, http://www.chemistdirect.co.uk/flexitol-lip-balm-for-severely-dry-lips_1_49671.html, its called flexitol, comes in good packaging, slanty toped plastic squeeze tube and works the same miracles. The blistex blue tub is quite good too.

  15. I LOVE Blistex but this is so true! When the tube is new, the minute you take the cap off it starts spewing everywhere, plus leaves the lid all messy when you put it back on. Once the tube is slightly empty it tends to be more battered, at which point the tube tears or splits and the stuff comes out the sides - argh!

  16. I completely agree with you, It's an amazing product, It's just the fountain effect you get when you squeeze too hard that really annoys me! great post :) xxx

  17. I used to use this all of the time and the tube is so annoying and messy!

  18. Your posts never fail to make me chuckle, and totally agree about the oozing - it's a risk to even take the lid off.

  19. i swear by Blistex too! It's the only thing that i can use on my lips to ensure they're not chapped to bits haha! xxx

  20. Those metal tubes should never be used to package anything that will be bashed around in a handbag! My tube got a hole in it when I bent it too, covering my handbag-innards with goo. Blistex Daily Lip Conditioner works just as well though, and comes in a sturdy tub and isn't gooey and gloopy.

  21. i love this product too but your right about it being uber messy. the american version looks spot on though

  22. does seem a bit odd yeah, they're missing a trick. maybe you should pitch it to them

    ReplyDelete
  23. Totally totally agree! Maybe we should email them en masse?

I love this product but I don't use it as much as I should because of the disastrous packaging- it's too much effort! It really does just coming zooming out of the tube! x

  24. hmmmm...the packaging also makes it look like it's for the treatment of hemorrhoids

  25. That is one of the most irritating things about an otherwise amazing product. I completely agree with you and everyone else whose commented here too! Why they haven't updated the packaging in line with the rest of their range is just plain odd?

I hope they take note of this, you should definitely present it to them!

  26. TBH babe I've never really thought about it in that much detail but you are SO right! Why would they put such an amazing product in such a crap tube?

  27. I agree completely! It's always a race to open the lid, get a tiny bit and close it otherwise you're left with a snail trail like ooze the length of your finger. the Blistex Intensive I also equally love, probably moreso because of its nice, mess free packaging. I find it does the same job, I'd reccommend you try it! :) x

  28. I love the blistex relief cream! I have such problems with extremely dry lips and this is the only thing that'll help! I went from having to apply carmex every 20mins every day just to not have sore painful lips, to now having to apply blistex maybe once/twice a day to keep them soft. But I completely agree, the packaging is a nightmare! I find that when it gets to the end of the tube, the packaging starts to rip and spurt in my bag!

  29. It works really well for my chapped lips but eughh I agree it's ridiculous packaging! The goo in the lid has started to get really sticky now.. mmm great.

  30. i completely agree. I have to use this due to horrendous medication that makes my lips ridiculously dry, and I'm on my 5th tube in 2 months! I'm sure this is because everytime I open it half the tube explodes at me.

  31. At last, a support group for this! I guess the Blistex people just think they sell so much of the stuff that it's perfect - when the real reason for high sales are that fan's of the stuff have to re-buy frequently. You really only get to use about half the amount in the tube due to the over splillage. Please Blistex people- listen to us and update the packaging. Those who don't use it say, don't squeeze it or don't put pressure on it. But when you buy it, it's already waiting to explode like a jack-in-the-box.

  32. I totally agree - this is my miracle product - doesn't just work for lips but also as an overnight saviour on sore red noses when a cold strikes. My solution to the squished tube is a little lipstick case (you know, the hard ones with a mirror in the lid). Keeps the Blistex tube nice and neat, keeps it from getting pressed and keeps it clean.
